Leadership Communications

Leadership involves communications and learning. And these are the two areas in which John specializes. By combining an extensive background in business communications with training and management development, John helps corporate clients develop their communications, learning, and leadership skills.

Communication for a leader becomes the act of making authenticity transparent. You achieve this transparency in three ways: speaking, listening, and learning. The essence of leadership communication boils down to the three-step cycle that is in perpetual motion. Not only is the cycle always moving, you will find yourself in any one of the steps at any given time with any given person. At some point you will be speaking to a colleague. At another time you will be listening to a group. And at yet another time you will be in your office or in your home thinking about what you heard and trying to make sense of it.

John's approach to communications and leadership is straightforward: design the learning objectives around strategic goals, then apply effective communications principles to make the learning exciting and effective. For the client, the learning should fulfill corporate objectives. For the individual, the learning should engage participants in ways that motivate them to want to know more.

His leadership work centers on how leaders can use their communications to build trust and drive results. By focusing on the concept of personal leadership which he defines as moving from the I can to the I will , John shows how leaders can use their communications to guide and inspire their people through every phase of the leadership process, from character and vision through planning, coaching, motivation and supervision.
